The Secret to Winning Cloth Diaper Giveaways

Online giveaways are everywhere, but are these giveaways legitimate and do people actually win?  A blogger will often be offered opportunities to giveaway products from various companies.  This benefits the company (product exposure), the blogger (increased blog traffic), and the reader (prizes). You may have noticed that Cloth Diaper Guru is recently featuring more giveaways and this is because our readers are requesting them.  Today we'll give you some secrets on how to increase your odds of winning.

1. Enter Giveaways from Reputable Pages
There are plenty of legitimate giveaways going on online.  Small blog giveaways offer the best chances of winning, receiving prompt notification that you won, and of offering good service should the prize sponsor drag his feet on prize fulfillment. Spend your time entering giveaways from websites you trust.

2. Assess your odds of winning
Winning random drawing giveaways is all about understanding statistics and, of course, having a little bit of luck.  There are some great low-entry giveaway link-ups, but sometimes even a giveaway that doesn't appear to be low entry actually is low entry.  Take this following example:

A giveaway has 650 current entries and ends in 2 days.  I can earn 65 entries.  If I do 18 of the 65 entries, I have a 2.7% chance of winning.  But if I do all the entries, I have a 9% chance of winning (or I could say I have, roughly, a 1 in 10 chance of winning).  Since the giveaway isn't over, the odds will change as more people enter.

3. Do higher point entry options and daily entries
Higher point entries, like subscribing by email or leaving a blog post comment, are a good way to increase the probability of having your name randomly selected.  Sometimes higher point entries require more effort and that's usually the reason they are valued higher. Daily entry options are a great way to earn entries. If it's a prize you're very interested in, stop by daily to take a free entry (which we always offer) or post a Tweet.

4. Check your spam folder
You won the giveaway, but you might miss out on a great prize by not checking your spam folder. Most bloggers need a response from the winner within 48-72 hours or a new winner will be selected. Be sure to visit your spam folder regularly if you have your spam filter set high.  Some blogs generate automatic email notification and these "bulk" emails are more likely to be sent to your spam folder.  We always send personalized email notifications to giveaway winners to reduce the likelihood of a missed notification.

5. Don't cheat
Cheating is both unsportsmanlike and unethical. Bloggers use verification methods to ensure that the selected winner actually did the entry option claimed. If it is discovered that a winner cheated in claiming entries, then that winner's name will be thrown out and a new winner will be drawn. I recently heard of a blogger who threw out five winners before drawing the name of an honest entrant.  Cheating isn't worth your time, so just don't do it.

6. Your time is valuable too
Giveaways are fun, but be sure to keep them in perspective.  Don't waste countless hours entering giveaways from websites you care nothing about.  If I do enter giveaways, they are usually ones featured on my favorite blogs or websites.  Since I focus on a handful of blogs, I can easily follow them all by email and social media.  This means I get easy entries when a giveaway is posted.

Hopefully these tip will help increase your odds of winning and, also, help you keep your sanity when you don't win.  Remember, winning is all about statistics and a little bit of luck.  Keep it fun, and don't forget to show your appreciation to the sponsor and bloggers.

  1. These are all really good tips. I also try to play the odds a bit, but then again I've also won a prize from a really large giveaway with over 10,000 entries before. Sometimes I win the giveaways where I only put in one entry for - which is hilarious to me since if I have the time I'll go back to my favorite giveaways and tweet / comment daily.

    1. Wow! It sounds like you had some good luck! I have a superstition that I always win things in sets of threes. Last spring was funny because I won three separate giveaways and they all involved some sort of T-shirt. I was entering a variety of different giveaways at the time (entertaining myself while on maternity leave) and it just happened that I won all the T-shirts. I was excited :)

  2. Thanks for the tips! It was an article similar to this on My Cloth Diaper Stash blog, that inspired me to start entering cloth diaper giveaways. It's been about a month, and I've won over $200 in prizes! I'm so glad I gave it a try. You are right, it is for sure about statistics and a little bit of luck! :)

  3. We have a joke in my area about how one of our cloth diapering moms has a Golden Horseshoe. I've never come across someone who wins as often as she does. Sometimes she loans out her Golden Horseshoe and we win. (In fact, my neighbor won a giveaway on my blog a couple of months ago.)

  4. So much math! Haha. JUST kidding. But seriously. The extra twitter entries really help. I'VE never won a giveaway, but every time I pull a winner, it's usually from someone who has tweeted every day. Great tips! Thank you!

  6. I would add to avoid giveaways that want you to add tons of new pages to like. One giveaway I started to enter wanted over 40 likes.... I was part way through doing it when I realised how many they wanted... and then I was put in "FB jail" because I liked too many pages. So all the pages I liked in the last month were removed from my likes and I couldn't like any pages for the next month :( I also made a twitter account just for giveaways, I actually haven't a clue how to make my own tweets :)

    1. Wow, I had no idea there was a limit to the number of pages you can like in a certain period of time. I also dislike the "farming" for likes, and I typically avoid giveaways that ask you to like a list of pages or accounts. If I don't like a page, I'm not going to "like" it.

    2. I created accounts just for giveaways since my regular accounts were sort of being overrun. And for the most part I simply stopped tweeting things. My account kept getting suspended for sending "unsolicited tweets". I'll do all the follows, but that's about it.

    3. Ugh I agree!! When they want you to like 40 pages and its mandatory to even when the prize, just not worth it! I completely understand liking the sponsor of but do I really need to like your aunt's blog or your sisters too??

  7. We love giveaways in my household! We have won SO MUCH in the two years we (by we, I mean fetus and I) have started entering. 2012 was a really lucky year for me, and I haven't won much this year . . . but every win is wonderful and great. When you win once, it renews your motivation to keep going. :)

But if you get busy with a baby or something, you can always pick up again later. I love giveaways!

  9. I really like how these giveaways are done. I don't have to worry about getting a virus too much or somehow getting into something that take my identity. Although twitter and pinterest kind of confuse me. Great tips!
